AEO vs SEO: What Is the Difference, & Do You Need Both?

SEO earns rankings and clicks; AEO earns citations inside AI answers. Same foundations, different result that counts. You need both; AEO fails without SEO.

SEO earns rankings and clicks in a results page. AEO earns being named and cited inside an AI answer. The foundations overlap (crawlability, indexation, schema, speed, entity consistency), but what counts as a result and where off-site work goes differ. You need both, and AEO fails without the SEO foundations.

This piece is the comparison guide for buyers comparing AEO vs SEO, AEO SEO packages, and the “geo seo” label searchers use. For the plain-English definition, start with What is answer engine optimisation?. For UK prices, see How much does AEO cost in the UK?. For how assistants pick brands, see How do you get recommended by ChatGPT and Claude?.

What SEO does that AEO still depends on

AEO does not replace technical SEO. It sits on top of it. If crawlers cannot fetch clean HTML, if the page is not indexed, if schema contradicts the copy, if the page is too slow for live retrieval, or if the brand looks like three companies across the web, answer engines have nothing honest to quote.

The SEO foundations AEO still needs:

  • Crawlability. OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot and friends must reach the money pages. A WAF rule that “stops scrapers” often stops assistants too.
  • Indexation. Assistants still inherit a lot of discovery from search indexes. An orphan page with no internal links is as invisible to AI retrieval as it is to Google.
  • Schema. Organization, Service and FAQ markup that match one canonical description reduce ambiguity. Schema does not invent authority; it stops the brand looking messy.
  • Page speed. Query-time crawlers fetch during a user’s question and time out on slow pages. Static HTML on a CDN clears that bar; client-rendered tabs that hide the answer do not.
  • Entity consistency. Same founding year, same location string, same one-line description on the site, LinkedIn, directories and press. Inconsistent entities dilute mention signals.

Those are ordinary SEO jobs. We still ship them under SEO and Support & Growth retainers and the technical checklist in our website checklist for a technical SEO audit. AEO programmes that skip this layer are content marketing with a new badge.

What changes with AEO

The job shifts from “rank and get the click” to “be named and cited inside the answer.” Research moves from keyword lists to an agreed list of questions your buyers ask. Tracking moves from positions to citation presence and sentiment. Off-site work moves from link targets to the sources assistants already cite. Reporting moves from sessions alone to the three numbers that show it is working, which you can defend at month three.

Off-site targetsLink targets and domain authorityThe listicles, reviews, YouTube and trade press engines already quote
ReportingTraffic and conversions from searchThe three numbers that show it is working: crawler activity, AI referral quality, branded search

Classic SEO still matters for the buyers who click blue links. AEO matters for the buyers who ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Google AI Overviews who to hire and never see page two. The overlap is real. The dashboard is not.

Where GEO fits

GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the same job under a different label. Searchers type “geo seo” more than they type the spelled-out phrase, so the label shows up in research tools even when the delivery programme is identical.

We use AEO on our AEO & AI Search Visibility page, keep GEO and AI SEO in the copy so searchers find us, and run one programme rather than three retainers. UK spelling belongs in the headings UK readers expect. The work does not change with the acronym.

If an agency sells AEO, GEO and AI SEO as separate products with separate retainers, ask what is actually different in the question list, the engines tracked and the sources pitched. Often the answer is packaging, not method.

Is AEO the new SEO?

No. AEO sits on top of SEO. It does not retire rankings, technical hygiene or honest content. It changes what you measure when assistants assemble answers from a handful of sources instead of showing ten blue links.

Searchable’s analysis of AI citations (September 2026) measured the share of citations that come from a brand’s own domain. Professional services sat at 26.9%. Retail and ecommerce 28.6%. Finance 29.6%. Hospitality 33.7%. B2B tech and media 41.4%. Even in the stronger brand-owned industries in that cut, most citations still come from somewhere else.

That is why “publish more blogs on our domain” is a weak AEO plan on its own, especially for professional services. Owned pillars still matter for ChatGPT-style retrieval and for humans who click through. Third-party listicles, review sites, YouTube and trade press often decide the shortlist. Scope should follow which sites AI already cites in your category.

Conductor CMO study, 2026: 94% of enterprises plan to increase AEO or GEO investment in 2026. Demand is rising. Undifferentiated “we do AI search” claims are rising with it. A clear starting picture and honest reporting are what separate a useful retainer from a label.

A worked week: what an SEO team already does vs what an AEO retainer adds

Most SEO, content and digital PR teams already hold the skills AEO builds on. What changes is the operating layer around assistants. Frame it as already in place, adapted, or genuinely new.

Already in place. Technical and crawl work. Content production. Digital PR and outreach muscle. The craft does not vanish; the brief changes.

Adapted for AEO. Keyword research becomes designing the list of questions your buyers ask, agreed with you across learn, consider and purchase. Rank tracking becomes citation tracking: who is named, which sources the engine credits, how sentiment reads. Link targets become the listicles and review pages assistants already pull from in your category.

Genuinely new. Connecting visibility to business outcomes inside the client’s own analytics. Crawler activity, AI referral quality and branded search are the three numbers that show it is working. None alone proves revenue. Together they show whether the programme is contributing, which is the conversation a serious buyer wants at month three.

A week on a growth-tier AEO retainer therefore looks familiar and different at once: ship a crawler or schema fix in the codebase, publish an answer-first page for a real question gap, pitch a source already feeding competitor answers, and update the citation report on the same question list you measured at the start. Classic SEO retainers under Support & Growth still cover rankings, content volume and technical debt. AEO retainers under AEO & AI Search Visibility price question coverage, citation tracking, work on the sites AI already cites, and a clear starting picture you can measure against.

Do you need both?

Yes in almost every commercial case where buyers research online. The mix depends on the situation, not on fashion.

Strong Google rankings, invisible in assistants. Keep the SEO programme. Add an AEO starting picture so you can see the citation gap on unbranded questions. Do not abandon rankings to chase a label.

Weak technical foundations, excited about AI search. Fix crawlability, indexation, speed and entity consistency first. AEO on a blocked or contradictory site wastes money. Start with the technical SEO audit checklist, then the AI visibility audit.

Professional services or other third-party-heavy categories. Budget early for earning mentions on the sites AI already quotes. Owned content alone fights the 26.9% own-domain median for professional services in Searchable’s September 2026 cut.

Ecommerce with shopping and informational answers. You need both classic SEO for category and product discovery, and AEO for assistant shortlists and AI Overviews. Product feed hygiene and answer-first guides both matter.

Early brand with almost no web presence. There is nothing honest for an assistant to retrieve. Build a clearable site and one consistent entity sheet before you buy citation tracking.

Someone selling guaranteed ChatGPT placements. Walk away. Assistants choose sources by their own retrieval rules. Buy a clear starting picture, an agreed list of buyer questions, and a month-three review instead.

FAQ

Is AEO similar to SEO?

Yes on the foundations: a clearable site, honest measurement and content that answers real questions. It differs on what counts as a result. Classic SEO tracks rankings and clicks. AEO tracks whether assistants name and cite you on the questions your buyers type.

Is AEO the new SEO?

No. AEO sits on top of SEO. It does not replace technical hygiene, indexation or rankings. It adds designing the buyer question list, citation tracking, earning mentions where AI already looks, and reporting the three numbers that show it is working, beside ordinary search metrics.

Yes. Crawlability, indexation, schema, page speed and entity consistency still gate whether assistants can fetch and trust you. AEO without those foundations fails quietly: the programme looks busy while crawlers never reach the money pages.

Assistants will keep changing. The durable advantages stay dull: identical facts everywhere, people writing about you where models already trust, pages that answer in the first screen, and crawlers that can fetch them. That is AEO vs SEO in practice - related jobs, different results that count, both required.
